A STRONG HIGHLAND LAIRD

The fate of his Highland clan rests on Laird Evander Mackenzie's shoulders. The long winter killed his crops, and now the threat of famine looms over the land. To keep his people from starving, Evander needs funds--and he needs them fast. When an English earl offers him an exorbitant dowry to marry the man's daughter, Evander thinks he's found the perfect solution. There's only one problem: his new bride won't go back to his castle without a fight.

NEEDS A WOMAN WHO CAN'T BE TAMED.

Feisty Lady Diana Stuart is determined to win her independence. Because of her refusal to marry, her father has imprisoned and abandoned her. Still Diana refuses to admit defeat, and she plots an escape to a cave steeped in local lore. But there, Diana meets another man determined to control her fate: Evander. Though Evander manages to capture her, Diana refuses to go meekly.

Evander is drawn to Diana's unconquerable spirit, but her secrets may lead to their undoing. In a world filled with death and heartbreak, is it fate or legend that will hold them together?

Book Review

Laid Evander Mackenzie is in a tough place with no money and no food, most of his people starving. When he gets the chance to marry Lady Diana Stuart for an handsome dowry, he jumps at the chance. What he doesn't know is that his bride to be is a hell cat. She can fight, look after herself and comes with a pair of deadly wolves.
Diana has never known love and tenderness since her mother died. Her father has tried to control her wild and stubborn nature and failed spectacularly. She's had to endure imprisonment, starvation and unwanted attention of suitors before she's drugged and kidnapped. Naturally she's in no mood to be helpful to Evander. Even if he's shown her more tenderness than she's seen in years.
I loved the way this relationship evolved from hostility to truce to eventually love.

Book Description

After years of training under the mysterious woman she knew only as My Lady, Sylvi is no closer to finding the man with half an ear that brought about the murder of everyone in her family. Now a skilled assassin guiding a network of spies of her own, she has every resource she could want. She just hasn't found her mark.

On a new assignment, Sylvi's blade misses its target, but for a change, she is grateful. Her subject, Ian, isn't just uncommonly skilled and roguishly handsome—he may know exactly where her family's murderers are.

Now unlikely allies, Sylvi will have to keep Ian close enough to get the information she needs. So close, that she fails to protect her own vulnerable heart. As she and Ian become lovers, she wonders: is a trustworthy ally? Or will he be her downfall?

Book Review

Sylvi was perhaps the strongest female character from book 1 in the series. The blonde who seemed heartless, till you looked a little closer. The scar under the ribbon on her neck, was a horror story waiting to be told. I'm still getting goosebumps over how she survived that trauma. I think this book better helped me understand this complex character. She's strong outside, but always so weak inside. She projects one thing to the world, while hoping someone will care enough to see through and call her on her deception.

The fact that she meets Ian because she's supposed to murder him? Now that's one thing you would never believe could start a romance! In each fight they have, it's interesting to see how Sylvi pushes through just about everything on the basis of the revenge that she has sworn to have. You can feel her conflict lift right off the pages and into your heart. Love or revenge what will she choose and that's when you fall a bit more in love with her broken strength.

Book Review

This is a collection of four books written by four different authors. However they all write about the precious stone known as the Heart of Scotland and the lady who is it's guardian during her lifetime.

The Highlander’s Quest by Eliza Knight. 1329 Scottish Highlands. The new guardian is Lady Julianna Sutherland, however there is a lot amiss as the king and her mother, the old guardian have been poisoned. She needs to protect the new boy king and keep the stone safe. She's lent some help from the suspicious Alistair Campbell.

Cassandra by Madeline Martin. Durham England 1086. Before Cassandra can claim guardianship of the stone, Fergus takes it. Now the guardian must not only recover the stone from him but also convince him that nothing can be gained by bringing the stone to his king. They have one evil witch to outwit.

The Protector by Cecelia Mecca. Isle of Skye Scotland 1273. Cecelia has been raised to believe she must protect the stone for Scotland. Of course she knows nothing of William, Lord of Camburg who manages to see through the glamour and steal the stone before she can claim it. When she catches up to him and demands the stone, he simply laughs, not that it will deter her from her life's mission.

The Highland Guard and His Lady by Lori Ann Bailey. Lady Leslee MacKinnon is the guardian of the stone and she is translating texts for Mary Queen of Scots. Captain Duncan Douglas finds her intriguing, but he's already battling past ghosts of losing his family. It will not do to be distracted from protecting the queen, but when her consort begins to threaten Leslee, Duncan realizes he will do a lot to protect her.

Book Description

Alec MacLean returns home after a decade to find his recently deceased father has let his inheritance fall to ruin. As the new laird, it’s Alec’s responsibility to rebuild the castle and restore the lands. He must also regain the people’s trust after having abandoned them so long ago, a feat not easily done when he fears he’s plagued with the same darkness as his father.

Celia escaped the North Berwick witch trials at a young age, surviving because of the sacrifice of her beloved caretaker. She’s made a life for herself in the wilds of Scotland where no laird rules, a life where she heals for coin, a life without love so she can never feel the hurt of loss again.

When the new laird comes back to claim his land, his determination to restore order threatens everything Celia has worked so hard to gain, especially with the undeniable attraction sizzling between them. Together, they will face all challenges, from the tangle of their own damaged pasts to the fire-fueled witch hunts sweeping the Isle of Mull. Together, they will find that the best way to overcome darkness and war is through the undeniable light of love.

Book Review

Alec has come back to a castle in ruins, a people plagued by bandits and a land gone wild. He has his task cut out for himself to claim his birthright. He's not afraid of hard work, but he's not expecting Celia to upset his well balanced apple cart.

Celia has a gift for healing, it's not witchcraft, it's knowledge of herbs. However that does not stop her from being sought out as a witch. Having escaped from a witch hunt as a child, she has tried to stay low key and heal those who came to her.

She was not looking forward to having to heal Alec. Even if he had saved the life of a young girl. The two of them are not looking for a relationship, but their sparks cause a fire between them. Both want to keep it purely physical, but love blooms.

Just when Celia felt that she could open her heart to more, an old enemy catches up to her and she must flee if she wants to live. The only way he can keep her safe is by staying away from her. Unfortunately, a misguided guided youth manages to bungle up her hiding space.

There are so many elements of drama, such complex characters and their motivation woven into the tale. You simply can't put the book down and say I'll come back to this. You have to read to find out what happened next, till you eventually end the book with a heartfelt sigh offering thanks to the author for having helped them find their happy ending despite all odds.

Emma escapes to a nearby estate where she stumbles upon a house party being held by the Wicked Earls’ Club and finds herself at the mercy of the most extraordinary earl. One who could save her or see her condemned.

PERHAPS THEY CAN SAVE EACH OTHER.
When innocent lies become reality and danger follows them every step of the way, could love be the answer to both their problems, or will their passions be their undoing?

Book Review

He's half British and half Scottish. The death of his grandfather renders him the Earl of Benton. It's a legacy he can't refuse, especially if he wishes to use his newly inherited wealth to restore his castle in Scotland. His mother Madge feels that she's lost him to his British heritage and creates a scheme to smuggle whiskey which she knows only he can help her with.

Alistair is on the way to help his mom in Scotland when Emma lands in his lap, literally. She's a merchant's daughter, but she's the heiress to a fortune so the ton will accept her. Only trouble is, she has no wish to marry. Especially not her Uncle's malicious son. Unfortunately he is her guardian for another month. A month that she may not survive.

Alistair takes Emma under his protection and offers her a trip to Scotland. It serves both their purposes. They pretend to be married and while it makes no difference in England, what Emma doesn't know is that declaring each other husband and wife in front of a witness in Scotland is all that it takes to be married.

How will she react to the news that she's actually married to the handsome Earl. Will he be able to win her trust and convince her that he does not have any need for her money? Given the condition of his castle in Scotland and the fact that he's running whiskey, he doesn't think so.

Another beautiful historical story from the author. The characters are lovable, the situations that they find themselves in funny to the reader, and there's plenty of action to keep you engrossed till the end of the story. The book is also part of a multi-author series known as the Wicked Earls' Club.

Book Description

AN UNCONVENTIONAL WOMAN…

Freya Campbell is the madam of Molly’s, an infamous Edinburgh bawdy house. Running the establishment not only enables her to help war widows and aid soldiers, but the income generated affords her family a good life and safety in times that are uncertain and dangerous.

AN HONORABLE MAN...

Ewan Fraser is a man shamed by his father’s transgressions. To salvage his legacy and name, he has earned his way as a Captain in the Black Watch, England’s Scottish regiment. When war turns the days dark and dismal, he fears for his mother's safety and will stop at nothing to protect her.

A LOVE THAT KNOWS NO BOUNDS.
With England's hold on Scotland tightening, Ewan and Freya must work together to save their threatened families. But can two unlikely lovers find happiness in a world with seemingly no future?

Book Review

Freya Campbell runs a brothel, but she's not your typical Madam. She's ensuring that the women who end up at her establishment have a chance to learn other skills and have a safe place to stay. She feeds the poor and does a whole lot of charity work which does not add up to the character of a Madam.

That's what intrigues Ewan Fraser, a Captain in the Black Watch. He's trying to remove the tag of traitor that was attached to his father not realizing the actual actions taken by that man saved many lives. Life becomes all the more confusing when the people whom he is supposed to fight along with end up burning his family home and killing his servants.

His mother barely survives the ordeal and it is only with Freya's help that he can rescue her. Unfortunately helping Ewan will cost Freya everything she has worked so hard to build. Can she walk away from everything just to help another lost soul? It's a lovely historical novel that explores how one action can be seen as treason as well as patriotism in the same time by different people. Well written story and interesting characters as always.

Book Description

Love can be the greatest possession.

Brianna Lindsay's grip on the inheritance that is rightly hers hangs by a thread. If the town finds out her father has died, Brianna will be forced into marriage with her loathsome cousin, Lord Robert, and will lose all of Edzell Castle and its lands. To protect her home, she'll have to trust a complete stranger, a brooding Highland barbarian who sweeps into Edzell with a small retinue and insists on replacing her Captain of the Guard. He proves his worth by defeating her men and she has no choice but to accept his offer.

Though his motives are suspect, Colin MacKinnon has nobility in his blood and good intentions in coming to Edzell. He seeks his own kingdom, one to rival his father's, and sets out to conquer Brianna in the best way he knows how—with seduction.

Brianna never thought of all the wealth she protects, the one thing she has left completely vulnerable is her heart. Colin never thought that of everything he stands to achieve, he might have to face the unexpected pain of loss. Together, they must navigate a treacherous world of spies and intrigue, of legacy and fidelity, of love and betrayal, to find what is truly worth possessing.

Book Review

Another excellent historical read from Madeline Martin. Brianna is desperate to retain her freedom, while her cousin tries to force her into marriage with him. She turns to her Captain of the Guard for help. Collin is not a commoner like she believed, as his father is a laird. However the situation is complicated and she needs to save him from hanging, for a crime that he did not commit.
What I loved about the book is that there is no single plot that takes you predictably from a to z. You have misunderstandings between the newly married couple, you have a temptress from the husband's past, you have a possible French father of the wife, not to mention a twin brother and disapproving father who also show up.

From the first page she has you hooked. I literally couldn't sleep without completing the novel.Totally recommend the read.

Book Description

Scottish Romance doesn't get much steamier—or more dangerous—than a spy hunting her quarry, and losing her heart to him instead.

To pay a seemingly impossible debt, Mariel Brandon has become a spy for Aaron, one of England's deadliest minds. Aaron's latest mission for the sharp-witted and daring Mariel is to find two people in a heavily fortified castle on the Isle of Skye, a castle headed by the clan MacDonald and the powerful Kieran. Mariel is to seduce Kieran and get him to take her to Skye. If she succeeds, Aaron promises to let Mariel's young brother go, and to free both of them from their debt. If she fails, her brother will die.

What she doesn't count on is craving Kieran MacDonald almost immediately upon meeting him. Now Mariel must keep a secret from Kieran—one that could get them both killed—as she tries to form a plan that will save her brother, get her out from under Aaron's thumb once and for all, and keep her in Kieran's strong arms forever.

Book Review

Mariel was forced to work for Aaron once she lost her parents to the plague. She tried to get out of the life that she hated but couldn't because Aaron kept her brother Jack hostage. Just when she though all hope was lost Aaron asks her to do one last task, promising to set both brother and sister free after it's done. Unfortunately Mariel will be forced to do the one thing that she has never had the stomach to do, kill someone. She hopes to get the information required from the Scottish Barbarian, so that she is not forced to murder him.

Kieran MacDonnald is the laird of Skye, and he's extremely suspicious of beautiful English women. There is no denying that he is drawn to the mysterious Mariel, but he is equally sure that he is never going to act on what seems to be a mutual attraction. He's convinced that she will not survive the hard life at Skye and eventually will return to England. Instead he is surprised at how resilient she prove and how she wins over all his people. Just as he goes and falls in love with her, she decides that she needs to murder him.

There are many moments in the book where human vulnerabilities are beautifully depicted. The moment when she realizes that she would need to sacrifice the man she loved, so that another child should not suffer like Jack has, was great. I particularly loved the way the author handled the scene where she is finally reunited with her brother, only to be rejected by him. Extremely well handled.

Book Description

Senara agrees to work as a lady's maid at Castle of Park to help ease the financial burden of her beloved family. She does not expect to have such a wicked mistress any more than she expects to find a handsome laird...or a ghost with a burning need for retribution.

Gavin vowed on his father's death bed to watch over his aunt, and regrets it every day. Especially when her new maid arrives. The woman is extraordinarily fascinating which stirs his cruel aunt's ire. Can he protect the woman from his aunt? Even more important, can he keep himself from giving into his longing for the country lass?

Theirs is a journey of treacherous pasts, painful loss, hidden longing and vengeance.

Book Review

It's a Cinderella story, with a ghostly twist.

When Senara leaves her home and family behind to come work for Lady Edana, she's only thinking about not being a burden to her family. Unfortunately her new employer is quite a difficult person to get along with. The bitter old maid is after her nephew Gavin to get married and beget a heir so that the king doesn't get his hands on their lands.

Gavin has been hoping to do the right thing and make a marriage of convenience and hopefully some profit. Then he meets Senara and she's a distraction he can not afford, yet is helpless to deny. Things come to a head when a ghost is freed from behind a wall by Senara. There are secrets in the castle that are unknown to Gavin and Senara, but will the secrets help them? You're going to have to read the book to find out.

What I really liked about the novel is that it took the author just five well defined characters to put across a wealth of knowledge about the time period and move the story forward. The writing is crisp and the suspense well managed. The ghost really does capture your imagination, and leaves you rooting for the young couple in love. The ending, while not unexpected did manage not to be very predictable.

Book Description

Connor Grant is in search of a lady. Not a bride, but a woman to become a skillful and seductive spy in the service of King James. In addition to being the King’s personal assassin, Connor heads a group of female spies who aid him in his work, women with nothing left to lose.

Ariana Fitzroy is the perfect mark. Destitute, orphaned, and completely alone, she’s missed her chance at an advantageous match at court and cheats at cards to survive. When Connor catches her in the act, he threatens to expose her, unless she joins his elite roster of spies.

She agrees and is whisked away to a deserted Scottish castle to begin her training. Ariana quickly takes to her lessons in seduction, deception, and hand-to-hand combat, but less easy to fight are her feelings of lust toward the ruggedly handsome Connor, feelings she suspects may be reciprocated.

When Connor recruits her help on a mysterious task, the pair must work together to track a dangerous target. But Ariana suspects Connor isn’t telling her everything—not just about the mission, but also about his past. Will the secrets between them threaten their mission? And will they be able to fight their attraction as they wonder who they can trust?

Book Review

While a historical romance, this book is nothing like the genre. You have the enigmatic Scotsman Connor Grant recruiting ladies from polite society to do things that most would not dream of in the time. Training physically to fight and defend themselves, learning languages to blend into different crowds, disguises, dresses and costumes, it's almost as much fun for the reader as it is for the characters to undergo the transformation.
The story itself, has two main characters who were broken in their own way and find that being together is a healing experience. The book has a strong female lead, which I personally like a lot. A woman who is determined to push forward in the face of adversity is always admirable. There is no predictable sequence in the whole book. You never know what they will face and how they will overcome it. The climax had enough twists to keep me riveted to the book till I read the end.
For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I'm not gong to divulge too much information, but the motley crew of Connor, Ariana, Delilah, Slyvi, and Liv stand up to the challenges that King James and his manipulating ways throw at them. What was particularly enticing was the epilogue where I'm intrigued to know what the girls will get up to next.
