Book Description

Scottish Romance doesn't get much steamier—or more dangerous—than a spy hunting her quarry, and losing her heart to him instead.

To pay a seemingly impossible debt, Mariel Brandon has become a spy for Aaron, one of England's deadliest minds. Aaron's latest mission for the sharp-witted and daring Mariel is to find two people in a heavily fortified castle on the Isle of Skye, a castle headed by the clan MacDonald and the powerful Kieran. Mariel is to seduce Kieran and get him to take her to Skye. If she succeeds, Aaron promises to let Mariel's young brother go, and to free both of them from their debt. If she fails, her brother will die.

What she doesn't count on is craving Kieran MacDonald almost immediately upon meeting him. Now Mariel must keep a secret from Kieran—one that could get them both killed—as she tries to form a plan that will save her brother, get her out from under Aaron's thumb once and for all, and keep her in Kieran's strong arms forever.

Book Review

Mariel was forced to work for Aaron once she lost her parents to the plague. She tried to get out of the life that she hated but couldn't because Aaron kept her brother Jack hostage. Just when she though all hope was lost Aaron asks her to do one last task, promising to set both brother and sister free after it's done. Unfortunately Mariel will be forced to do the one thing that she has never had the stomach to do, kill someone. She hopes to get the information required from the Scottish Barbarian, so that she is not forced to murder him.

Kieran MacDonnald is the laird of Skye, and he's extremely suspicious of beautiful English women. There is no denying that he is drawn to the mysterious Mariel, but he is equally sure that he is never going to act on what seems to be a mutual attraction. He's convinced that she will not survive the hard life at Skye and eventually will return to England. Instead he is surprised at how resilient she prove and how she wins over all his people. Just as he goes and falls in love with her, she decides that she needs to murder him.

There are many moments in the book where human vulnerabilities are beautifully depicted. The moment when she realizes that she would need to sacrifice the man she loved, so that another child should not suffer like Jack has, was great. I particularly loved the way the author handled the scene where she is finally reunited with her brother, only to be rejected by him. Extremely well handled.

Book Description

Christmas Town doctor Kurt Christmas has loved high school guidance counselor Savannah Livingston his entire life. While he's had plenty of opportunity to meet beautiful and accomplished women, playboy bachelor Kurt hasn't become seriously interested in any of them. He still pines for the stunning redheaded rebel with emerald-green eyes, who took his breath away at sixteen. When Kurt and Savannah reconnect in Tennessee at Savannah's sister's wedding, that old flame reignites and Kurt finds himself hoping for a brand new start. Yet Savannah's current circumstances in Miami threaten to hold her at bay. If Kurt could write a prescription for anything, it would be to win Savannah's heart. But will love be enough to conquer the secrets that stand between them?

Book Review

If you've been following the series you know that Kurt Christmas is the Christmas Town doctor and Savannah is his high school sweetheart. She is also the town sheriff's little sister, who happen's to be Kurt's best friend. Not to mention Olivia Claus, her elder sister is also happily married to Kurt's cousin.
When Savannah gets roped in to help start out the children's theater in Christmas Town, she figures it's a good opportunity to spend some time with her sister and big brother for a month. She knows she will have to face up to her past with Kurt but doesn't think anything will happen.
What she doesn't count on is the special brand of magic that follows the Claus and Christmas families. And Kurt has more than one magical trick up his coat's sleeve! Mix that with a commitment cookie and things get interesting. Really sweet continuation of the series.

Book Description

Senara agrees to work as a lady's maid at Castle of Park to help ease the financial burden of her beloved family. She does not expect to have such a wicked mistress any more than she expects to find a handsome laird...or a ghost with a burning need for retribution.

Gavin vowed on his father's death bed to watch over his aunt, and regrets it every day. Especially when her new maid arrives. The woman is extraordinarily fascinating which stirs his cruel aunt's ire. Can he protect the woman from his aunt? Even more important, can he keep himself from giving into his longing for the country lass?

Theirs is a journey of treacherous pasts, painful loss, hidden longing and vengeance.

Book Review

It's a Cinderella story, with a ghostly twist.

When Senara leaves her home and family behind to come work for Lady Edana, she's only thinking about not being a burden to her family. Unfortunately her new employer is quite a difficult person to get along with. The bitter old maid is after her nephew Gavin to get married and beget a heir so that the king doesn't get his hands on their lands.

Gavin has been hoping to do the right thing and make a marriage of convenience and hopefully some profit. Then he meets Senara and she's a distraction he can not afford, yet is helpless to deny. Things come to a head when a ghost is freed from behind a wall by Senara. There are secrets in the castle that are unknown to Gavin and Senara, but will the secrets help them? You're going to have to read the book to find out.

What I really liked about the novel is that it took the author just five well defined characters to put across a wealth of knowledge about the time period and move the story forward. The writing is crisp and the suspense well managed. The ghost really does capture your imagination, and leaves you rooting for the young couple in love. The ending, while not unexpected did manage not to be very predictable.

Book Description

Cantilevered tales is a story about people, their quirks and why they become who they become. And lots of laughter!

I overheard a group of people talking about saving a water body from some unscrupulous builder and started keeping tabs on them. Not because I was interested in saving the environment or even that small little lake. What did interest me were the disparate lot of people and some desperate ones among them, who were determined that they were going to save a stagnant water body, which in my opinion had outlived its usefulness as anything at all, from becoming an office complex.

This is not a Builder v Helpless citizen epic. In fact that is the least important part of the book. This is about a group of inept people who you want to reach out and protect but you discover are more than capable of taking care of not just themselves, but of you too.

Book Review

The book was an interesting peek into a way of life that most of us have never experienced. A man living with a set of family retainers in a setting close to nature, while still straddling the life of a busy bureaucrat in the government. The author introduces you to rich characters, complete with life histories, but it's never boring. the plot itself is simple. Man protecting his home VS might of the builder. What makes it different is the unveiling of the darkness of the human nature through small incidents adding up to what we survive in civilized society today.

Book Description

Mary Ellen Meeks isn’t looking for love in Paradise, Virginia. She’s aiming to make a fresh start teaching kindergarten at Turtle Creek Elementary. When a wayward rooster arrives on her doorstep one rainy October morning, good-hearted Mary Ellen temporarily takes him in. Then the mischievous fellow she names “Crazy” makes himself at home, turning her whole world upside down. Soon she’s chasing her chicken across the street and running straight into her handsome principal: kindly single dad, Wes Johnson.

Widower Wes has never met anyone quite so unusual or intriguing as his pretty new neighbor in Sweetheart Valley Hills. Though he surely can’t become involved with the beautiful blonde with big blue eyes, particularly since he’s her boss—and she’s his daughter’s teacher! Yet the fates and a matchmaking rooster have other plans… As autumn leaves turn bright red and gold, there’s romance in the air in Paradise. And that gives Crazy something to crow about.

Book Review

This is one of the most unusual pet stories I've read. Dogs, cats, hamsters, yeah, but a rooster? That too with a city girl?It was an adorable story of second chance love brought together by Crazy the rooster. Mary and Wes bond over caring for the rooster and of course the fact that he's her boss at school helps keeping them in touch. Not to mention that his daughter is in Mary's class at school. It's a very sweet HEA. Enjoyed reading it.

Book Description

Meet Nia Rivers: archaeologist, fashionista, and an ancient immortal with a serious memory problem.

For the last couple of centuries, Nia has been trying to fill in the blanks of her past by shedding light on history's darkest stories. Her motto: the ugliest stories are the ones that deserve to be told the most.

But when a mysterious woman comes forth with a two-thousand year old relic from Nia's past, Nia isn't sure if the story connected to it is one she wants told to the world. Unfortunately, Nia has no choice but to uncover the truth--fast--before a greedy land developer buries the site forever. The fact that he's also an immortal, with a millennia-old grudge against her, doesn't help. Neither do the dark assassins who have been stalking her for centuries, and who've suddenly decided to up their game to end her life.

Letting her enemies have their way might be best for Nia, especially when the truth might expose a horrific crime from Nia's past. But all stories deserve to be told.

Even the ugliest ones.

Even if they say you might be a mass murderer.

Book Review

Just started this series and have to say that Nia's giving Sunaya serious competition in my eyes. This immortal woman who has cracks in her memory and can't figure out the reason why she's been targeted by Ninjas is a combination of vulnerable and fierce. She's practically immune to bullets and knives, but her heart is confused about why Tres seems familiar and safe when it is Zane who she loves. Add our tomb raiding human, Loren to the mix and you've got an epic start to a new series.
Even as she answers your questions she creates more! This is one author I love reading.

Book Description

Connor Grant is in search of a lady. Not a bride, but a woman to become a skillful and seductive spy in the service of King James. In addition to being the King’s personal assassin, Connor heads a group of female spies who aid him in his work, women with nothing left to lose.

Ariana Fitzroy is the perfect mark. Destitute, orphaned, and completely alone, she’s missed her chance at an advantageous match at court and cheats at cards to survive. When Connor catches her in the act, he threatens to expose her, unless she joins his elite roster of spies.

She agrees and is whisked away to a deserted Scottish castle to begin her training. Ariana quickly takes to her lessons in seduction, deception, and hand-to-hand combat, but less easy to fight are her feelings of lust toward the ruggedly handsome Connor, feelings she suspects may be reciprocated.

When Connor recruits her help on a mysterious task, the pair must work together to track a dangerous target. But Ariana suspects Connor isn’t telling her everything—not just about the mission, but also about his past. Will the secrets between them threaten their mission? And will they be able to fight their attraction as they wonder who they can trust?

Book Review

While a historical romance, this book is nothing like the genre. You have the enigmatic Scotsman Connor Grant recruiting ladies from polite society to do things that most would not dream of in the time. Training physically to fight and defend themselves, learning languages to blend into different crowds, disguises, dresses and costumes, it's almost as much fun for the reader as it is for the characters to undergo the transformation.
The story itself, has two main characters who were broken in their own way and find that being together is a healing experience. The book has a strong female lead, which I personally like a lot. A woman who is determined to push forward in the face of adversity is always admirable. There is no predictable sequence in the whole book. You never know what they will face and how they will overcome it. The climax had enough twists to keep me riveted to the book till I read the end.
For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I'm not gong to divulge too much information, but the motley crew of Connor, Ariana, Delilah, Slyvi, and Liv stand up to the challenges that King James and his manipulating ways throw at them. What was particularly enticing was the epilogue where I'm intrigued to know what the girls will get up to next.

Book Description

What if ISIS controlled America?

Eisa McCarthy lives in Caliphate City under the control of the radical Islamic group, the Ghuraba. Seven years ago General Mohammad bin-Rasulullah defeated the United States in a ruthless betrayal and set up their worldwide Caliphate in the ruins of Washington, D.C. The Ghuraba's supreme holy leader, the Abu al-Ghuraba, claims Eisa's father gave him control of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, a claim bolstered by the smoldering ashes of many cities and her Syrian-born mother's testimony. But after her mother is accused of apostasy, she learns her father may not be the 'martyr' the Ghuraba claim.

Do the Ghuraba really possess the launch codes for the ICBM missiles? Or did her father 'lock them out' as Colonel Everhart, the rebel commander, wants her to tell the world? If she fights, the Ghuraba will kill her little sister, but if she doesn't, eventually the Ghuraba will hack in and nuke them all. All Eisa has are a string of Muslim prayer beads and a pre-Islamic myth her father told her the night he disappeared.

The fate of the world, and her little sister's life, hang in the balance as Eisa sorts through ancient myth, her Muslim faith, and what really happened the night the Ghuraba seized control.

Book Review

This is not light reading. This book brings out questions that you never want to answer. Disturbingly accurate in the descriptions of a male dominated ISIS society, the book really sent shivers down my spine. The story of Eisa McCarthy is one of survival. As a woman, and as a Muslim. The protection she wants to offer her younger sister but can not. The heartbreak of being torn from the familiar and thrust into the unknown. The simple pleasures of being a teenager, denied.

When she swears that she will make a widow out of her sister, you can feel her anguish and her determination not to be helpless anymore. I think that scene was one of the most memorable in the book. Reading the book made me glad that this was just a novel, that it was not my reality. Then it struck me, it may not be my reality, but hundreds of women live through such time each day in the world today. That really made me feel so helpless and frustrated.

The writing is phenomenal. The story does not allow you to keep the book down. The characters are so well developed you can imagine meeting them on the street. All I can say is that it took me a while to recover from the book world Anna Erishkigal created.

Book Description

Can one love destroy the world?
Marielle and Faris have risked it all for love: their safety, their lives, even humanity itself. Their mistakes are grave and the entire world is paying dearly. Akeelah has created a vicious, half-djinn army and is bent on killing every single human on the planet. Her powers are second only to her hatred. No one is safe, not when the creature’s goal is to rule the physical realm.

Only Marielle and Faris know how Akeelah built her army, and only they know how to destroy it. Marielle would rather forget the role she plays in this terrible game. She would rather run away with Faris, never to return—humanity be damned—but who is she kidding? There is no way she can let the evil Djinn win. Marielle’s fate was sealed the day she unwittingly gave Akeelah the answers to her thousand-year-old questions. Now Marielle’s guilt is too heavy to simply walk away. The fate of every citizen on Earth, especially her father, depends on her and the man she loves.

Book Review

It's time for Faris and Marielle to face the terror that is Akeelah. No matter how he tries Faris can't keep Marielle out of trouble till the evil is wandering their world. The action is superlative, the characters all grow and come into their own. The twists and turns make you wish for a seat belt. Plenty of little thrills and surprises sprinkled in the story. Witches, demons, djinns, oh my! Overall I loved the story...best part ever...he finally gets to say the three words. Not quite the way one imagined them the first time, but totally awesome all the same.

Book Description

The evil Djinn has been banished, but Marielle’s supposedly happy days are still filled with fear. She feigns a settled appearance but is continually on edge because of Akeelah’s threats of a painful revenge.

When Akeelah does reappear, Marielle’s notions of the creature’s cruelty are surpassed. The Djinn is worse than Marielle ever imagined. Akeelah is crazed, ready to cause a deadly chaos, and willing to so whatever it takes to unveil the secrets which will give her power over human souls.

During her quest, Akeelah captures Faris, Marielle’s one and only love. They are torn asunder, leaving Marielle on her knees, brokenhearted. Without him, she is not whole. Anger brews slowly within her. The situation is personal now, and she’s not about to sit idle and let her grief win. She will do whatever it takes to get her one love back—even if it means putting the entire human race at risk.

Book Review

Just as things begin to settle down for Faris and Marielle things go crazy again. A djinn may not be able to physically harm a human, but it's easy to find other twisted humans who would do anything for power and money. Faris chooses to leave out of his own choice with Akeelah believing he is sparing Marielle, but Akeelah is not exactly known for keeping her word. On the other hand Marielle would do all she can to get Faris back safely...even contact a recluse Djinn expert. It may not have been the best idea she ever had....
